SA's greatest writer?

I have always regarded Herman Charles Bosman as the greatest writer South Africa has produced. Nobel laureates Nadine Gordimer and JM Coetzee both bore me to tears. Here is my little tribute to HCB.

Blast from the past

Flipping through my old papers, I came across this caricature of Australian fast bowler Merv Hughes from 1994, when I worked for The Star newspaper in Johannesburg.

Updates, etc.

Hello! Sorry about the long silence. I've had a tremendously busy and fruitful 12 months. One of my paintings, In All of the Noise, I am silence, was selected as a finalist for the Sanlam National Portrait Award, and my novel, Wat Het Geword van Dinsdag? made it into the last 10 of NB's Groot Afrikaanse Romanwedstryd. Alas, I didn't win either, but I am thrilled with the fact that I came close - twice.
The novel is published by Human & Rousseau and will be on the shelves next month.
On the caricature front, weekends have been busy, especially compared to previous winters.
I've been experimenting with a new brush pen. (I still prefer the tried-and-tested Pentel Aquash, to be honest. More control.) Herewith some examples with the new brush on the block:

Ayo the jazzman

I met Ayo at a recent wedding in Johannesburg, and took the opportunity to draw him while we were waiting for the arrival of the guests. What a saxophonist! What a cool guy!

Naomi and Naomi

Naomi and Naomi (yes indeed) were at Oscar's, Hermanus, and I happened to have pen and paper at hand. So here they are!

December Madness!

I drew close to 1 000 faces in December -- the peak of wedding season and party season. I am lucky enough to live in Hermanus, with most gigs along the gorgeous Boland wine routes. I'll never tire of the wonderful scenery.
Every once in a while I got a chance to take a quick breather and snap the subjects with their caricatures:
